But who are you, O man, to talk back to God? "Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, 'Why did you make me like this?'" Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for noble purposes and some for common use?
Romans 9:20-21
Asking questions is a natural part of growing up. When you were younger, you probably accepted things more readily that you do now. But as you grow toward independence, you begin to think more for yourself. You no longer want others to make your decisions for you. This is a normal step as you advance toward maturity. Paul warns, however, that there is one line you should never cross: you should never challenge God's wisdom. Paul is adamant that no one has the right to talk back to the Lord of the universe.
God is in control of all that exists, including you. He has had a plan for your life since before you were born. This plan is as unique as you are, and it involves the very best that God has to give you. Don't get caught up in comparing your place in God's plan to the place he has for others. That will make you either proud or envious. You'll lose sight if the truth that God loves you just as he loves your friends.
You may feel that your friends are more gifted that you are. Some may be called to serve God in glamorous ways, while God's plan for you seems more commonplace. Don't ever doubt that God knows what He's doing. Just as the potter has total mastery over the clay in his hands, God has the absolute right to your life. He wants to mold you and stretch you to suit his plan for you. That is His right as your Creator. Trust Him; He knows what he's doing. Choose to serve the Lord cheerfully in everything you do, no matter how mundane, and you will discover the secret to a joyful, meaningful life.
